Description: A short incision can either be made in the crease under the breast, or around the areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple), or in the armpit. Your surgeon may choose to place the implant behind the breast tissue or underneath your chest wall muscle (the pectoralis muscle). Working through the incision, the surgeon lifts your breast tissue and skin to create a pocket, and will then place the implant which is either filled with a salt-water solution known as saline, air filled, or filled with a medical grade silicone gel. The drainage tubes are installed followed by the stitching of the incisions. The patient is administered antibiotics and given a slightly compressive bandage.
Post-Operative Care: There is a 24 to 48 hour hospital stay so that the drainage and its removal are done at the patient’s bedside. Once you have been discharged, you must wear a non-underwired support bra day and night for 1 month. You may see definitive results after 3 to 6 months.
Check ups: Three times during the first year, and then once a year. The surgeon may suggest a mammography in case of any doubts. You must also be aware that in 8 to 10 years the implants need to be replaced.
Observations: We do not recommend surgery if the patient is considering pregnancy within the year. A mammography is compulsory before surgery. After surgery, you will find that your breasts are painful, particularly if the implants have been placed under the muscle.
Risks: Bruising; oedemas; infection; implant leakage (more so when the implant is placed behind the gland); keloids (nodular, frequently lobulated, firm, movable scar tissue).
Important! Pay extra care when wearing the safety belt that is too tight. We advice you not to sleep on your stomach throughout the first fortnight.
